Lip Filler Aftercare: What Not to Do and How Long to Avoid Straws

Walking out of your appointment is an exciting moment, but it’s just the start of the journey.

While the injections are being done, your body is just beginning to let the filler settle into your natural lip tissue. Because we move our mouths constantly to talk and eat, the way you treat your lips in those first few days really matters for your final look.

At Savvy Rejuvenation & IV Bar, we see aftercare as a way to protect your investment. For a short window of time, the filler is still "finding its home," and your skin is recovering.

To help you get results that look and feel natural, you need to give your body a little extra grace while it heals. Here is a down-to-earth look at what actually helps during your recovery.

The First 48 Hours: Giving Your Lips Space to Settle

When fillers like Restylane® or Juvéderm® are first injected, they haven't quite bonded with your lip tissue yet. During this time, the gel is still somewhat soft.

One of the main reasons we talk about aftercare is to prevent something called filler migration. This is just a fancy way of saying the product moved from the lip into the skin around it, which can cause a puffy look at the edges of your mouth.

The Real Story on Straws

The question we hear most is: How long do I really have to avoid straws?

It isn't the drink itself that causes issues; it’s the way your muscles move when you pucker up to use a straw. This repeated motion can press on the filler while it’s still settling.

We recommend skipping straws for the first 48 hours.

Will a few sips ruin your results? Probably not.

But avoiding that strong puckering motion for two days is a simple way to play it safe. If you can drink from a regular cup for those first two days, your lips will have a much easier time settling into place.

Habits to Pause for a Day or Two

To keep your healing as smooth as possible, we recommend taking a break from these activities for at least the first day or two.

Intense Workouts

Exercise gets your heart pumping and increases blood flow. While that’s usually a good thing, right after an injection, it can cause more swelling and make bruising more likely.

We usually suggest skipping the gym for at least 24 hours, or until any initial heat or tenderness in your lips has calmed down.

High Heat

Saunas, steam rooms, and very hot showers can increase the blood flow to your face. This extra heat often makes swelling look much more dramatic than it needs to be.

Try using lukewarm water and staying in a cool environment for the first few days.

Touching or Massaging

Unless we specifically tell you to, please try not to rub or press on your lips for the first week. It’s very common to feel a tiny bump and want to "fix" it, but most of the time that’s just a little bit of fluid that will go away on its own.

Pressing on it too early can actually move the filler. If you still feel a bump after a week, you can check out our guide on how to massage lip filler lumps for a safe way to handle it.

Alcohol

Alcohol can thin your blood and open up your blood vessels. If you have a drink within 24 hours of your appointment, you’re much more likely to see bruising.

If you can, try to avoid alcohol for a day before and after your visit to keep things simple.

What to Expect While You Heal

It’s helpful to remember that you won’t see your "true" lips for a little while. Swelling usually peaks about 24 to 48 hours after your visit. During this time, your lips might feel a bit firm or look a little uneven.

This is a totally normal part of the process. To help things along:

  • Ice gently: A clean cold compress for 10 minutes at a time can help take the heat out of the swelling.

  • Prop your head up: Using an extra pillow for the first night can help keep fluid from settling in your face.

  • Be patient: It often takes about two weeks for the filler to fully integrate and for all the tiny bits of swelling to disappear.

You can see how results change from "day two" to "day fourteen" in our before-and-after gallery.

When to Give Us a Call

Most people heal without any issues. However, we want you to know exactly when to reach out for a professional opinion. Please contact us right away if you notice:

  • Pain that gets worse: It’s normal to feel a bit tender, but sharp or increasing pain is a sign we need to talk.

  • Strange skin colors: If you see any white, grayish, or blue patches that don’t look like a normal bruise, we want to see you immediately.

  • Feeling very hot or red: If the area feels hot to the touch or you see redness spreading, it could be a sign of infection.

Your Questions Answered

1. Is it okay to fly after lip fillers?

You can fly, but the dry air and cabin pressure on a plane can sometimes make swelling worse. If you have a choice, we suggest waiting about 48 hours before a flight. If you have to fly sooner, just make sure to drink plenty of water.

2. When can I wear my favorite lipstick?

Try to wait 24 hours before applying anything to your lips. Those tiny injection points need a day to close up so you don't irritate them or trap bacteria. After that, a gentle, clean lip balm is a great way to stay comfortable.

3. Can I go to the dentist?

We usually suggest waiting at least two weeks before any dental cleanings or appointments. The stretching and pressure that happens at the dentist can move the filler before it has fully settled into your tissue.

4. Will my results last longer if I’m careful?

Being careful in the first few days doesn’t necessarily change how long the filler lasts, but it does make sure the results you’re keeping are smooth and even. You can learn more about how long lip fillers really last in our detailed guide.

Caring for Your New Look

Lip filler aftercare isn't about following a long list of scary rules. It’s just about giving your body the time it needs to settle.

By being a little cautious with straws, exercise, and heat for just a couple of days, you’re helping your lips heal in a way that looks and feels like you.
